# News All of the news in regards to changes will be posted here. Difference from Changelog is that this will contain compressed news and somewhat expanded explenations when needed. Will also list news outside of direct changes from changed packages/versions. (What was previously done with 'NOTE:..' in the README). ## 2026/4/5 - Lightpad sees the light A small update on Lightpad. With the update of budgie-lightpad-applet-0.2.0 there is now a build in method to blur the background picture of your desktop. This makes the darkening of the background previously in 0.1.0 gone. One could choose to stick to the old one or pick the new version. If blur instead of darkening the background is prefered, update as usual. Otherwise one needs to mask the update the following way: echo '>=budgie-extra/budgie-lightpad-applet-0.2.0' >> /etc/portage/package.mask/budgie-lightpad-applet ## 2026/3/11 - We have landed on the wayland! Budgie-10.10.2 release! Budgie-Desktop 10.10 has been released to the public out of preview testing. This version is now for wayland only. The old 10.9.3 is still using X11-Xorg. This caused a major shift and split in the repository ebuilds. Based on your setup and preferred display server you may have to stick with 10.9.3 or fully upgrade to 10.10.2. Please do note that Budgie will never go back to X11-Xorg and all future versions will run on Wayland. Therefor it is recommended at some point to switch to Wayland. With the default desktop profile in portage wayland should be installed by default. It is fine to wait till 10.10.2 ebuilds have been stabilized but that could take a while. Even then 10.9.3 will not vanish. Beyond that there are also other changes. Applets have been taken out of budgie-meta and instead are now inside budgie-applets-meta where you can configure which ones to install by setting the useflag group BUDGIE_APPLETS (No longer BUDGIE_EXTRAS_APPLET. Budgie-Desktop 10.9.3 is also effected with these changes). New WIKI: https://gitlab.com/SarahMia/sarahmiaoverlay/-/wikis/home Yes there is now a wiki. Most information is now out of the README.md and inside the wiki. Migrating from 10.9.3 to 10.10.X: https://gitlab.com/SarahMia/sarahmiaoverlay/-/wikis/Upgrading#1093-to-1010x Full Applets list: https://gitlab.com/SarahMia/sarahmiaoverlay/-/wikis/Budgie-Applets Troubleshooting: https://gitlab.com/SarahMia/sarahmiaoverlay/-/wikis/Troubleshooting ### Pre Update regardless of version: 1) Be sure to double check your useflags if you have set BUDGIE_EXTRA_APPLETS. It is now called BUDGIE_APPLETS. 2) Be sure to check if you want to stay on X11 or don't mind switching to Wayland. ### X11-Xorg: Budgie-Desktop-10.9.3 Since budgie-meta no longer contains applets it is recommended to manually update running the emerge command below. This will pull in all new applets that were not part of the applet. Please check your changes first and adjust if needed! `emerge --ask --verbose budgie-meta budgie-applets-meta` ### Wayland: Budgie-Desktop-10.10.2 and newer. As per usual the new version is set with unstable keywords. Therefor make the following is set: `echo '*/*::SarahMiaOverlay' > /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/budgie-desktop-latest` Afterwards, run the following command, by default 10.10.2 should be selected to merge. Since a number of applets are not supported for 10.10.2 it is recommended to first check all the changes: `emerge --ask --verbose budgie-meta budgie-applets-meta` After that you should logout of your current session and then login back in to Budgie Desktop. ### Final words It took me a lot of time and effort to make these ebuilds. The changes are quite significant and many issues along the way were encountered. Due to that 10.10.2 will remain unstable for at least several months. Any more information or if you have any issues please see the wiki here: https://gitlab.com/SarahMia/sarahmiaoverlay/-/wikis/home For the full list of changes please refer to the Changelog here: https://gitlab.com/SarahMia/sarahmiaoverlay/-/blob/master/CHANGELOG.md ## 2026/1/5 Happy New Year! Final changes pre 10.10 release With the upcoming 10.10 release of Budgie Desktop and going full Wayland instead of Xorg 10.9.3 will mark the final release of Xorg support. With that all ebuilds that were unstable have now made stable. All the applets were added in preperation to this but also works for 10.9.3 are also made stable. From now on the next release will be 10.10. Even though 10.9.4 was released this was nothing but preparation for the 10.10 release as well, bringing nothing new or any fixes/changes. Therefor I will not make ebuilds for this version. As well since it changed its library name from budgie-1.0 to budgie-2.0 which used for Wayland distinction but 10.9.4 will still rely on Xorg. This is fine for binary distributions but for Gentoo this doesn't work and would cause the situation where wayland useflag for X would be required, which is weird and messes things up. From now on work on 10.10 ebuilds is being done. 10.9.3 will not be removed once 10.10 is released or later when it has been made stable. As this will be final version that will work on Xorg. The list for 10.9.3 stabilization is as follows: - budgie-desktop-10.9.3 - budgie-extras-1.9.0 - budgie-control-center-1.4.1 - budgie-analogue-clock-applet/budgie-analogue-clock-applet-2.2 - budgie-browser-profile-launcher-applet/budgie-browser-profile-launcher-applet-2.1.2 - budgie-cpufreq-applet/budgie-cpufreq-applet-1.1.0 - budgie-cputemp-applet-1.2.0 - budgie-hostname-applet-1.0 - budgie-indicator-applet-0.7.2 - budgie-indicator-sysmonitor-applet-0.10.2 - budgie-lightpad-applet-0.0.3 - budgie-media-player-applet-1.2.0 - budgie-performance-gauge-applet-1.2 - budgie-user-indicator-redux-applet-1.0.2 All older versions are removed. ## 2025/9/14 With hope we have arrived at our new destination! New Budgie Desktop minor release New version of budgie-desktop 10.9.3 has been released. With that a slew of issues I had in regards to deps have also been fixed. So I am happy. Along with the new versions, all packages have been moved to a new category, either budgie-base or budgie-extra, no more gnome-extra. New versions: - budgie-desktop-10.9.3 - budgie-meta-10.9.3 - budgie-control-center-1.4.1 Repository changes: - All core packages of budgie have been moved from gnome-extra to budgie-base - All applets have been moved from gnome-extra to budgie-extra - The category gnome-extra has been deleted. Budgie 10.10 is still being worked on. I have no idea when it will come but I do not expect anything before the next year. It wouldn't surprise me if takes upwards of a year before it arrives. Hence this minor release they made instead. **Important:** For some reason (I think preparation for 10.10) the actual gnome-settings-daemon requirement of budgie-control-center is actually 49.beta or higher. In the source i could find no reason for this specific requirement. They did state it was due to chaintools. So something on a higher level is going on, but should for us mere mortals not be relevant. Seeing as this is a) a beta version and b) not available in gentoo at all I have modified it to require and look if version 47.2 or higher is installed. For me this worked. **Should you get issues do let me know, I will then pull down the these versions till 49 is in the gentoo repository!** As can be expected these ebuilds are added as unstable keywords. I will leave this up for unstable for a longer period of time of 2 months at least. ## 2025/7/18 Clickydy Click Music! Compile fix and media-player-applet got a version bump. budgie-media-player-applet: This applet got a version bump. Biggest features are that now you can control mouse click actions on what to do with the applet. (open popup, play/pause, forward and backwards respectively). As well wayland compatible now for future budgie-desktop release. budgie-desktop: So late august vala 0.56.18 was made stable, this version actually contained an API change that broke compilation. So yeah lovely. This caused it unable to be compiled. Patch added with the fix to allow compilation again. Regarding budgie desktop 10.10 release, still no news. I am keeping an eye on it but no idea when it will be released. ## 2025/6/10 Indicators arrived! 2 New applets are added. Unless I see more are used elsewhere this should it for a long while. The added applets are: - budgie-indicator-applet - budgie-indicator-sysmonitor-applet Budgie-indicator-applet is used to have applications place an icon with any indicator for quick actions (similar in a way to a system tray) and the budgie-indicator-sysmonitor-applet is used to monitor system information such a temperatures/load etc. *Note: While budgie-indicator-applet is appearing for me I was unable to actually see any app in there. Basically missing the apps and accounts for proper testing. If you see it not working properly please do let me know.* ## 2025/6/2 New applets added, semi preparation for 10.10 eventual release 8 New applets were added to the repository. For now all them are made to work with mainly with Budgie-Desktop 10.9.2. They are not added to the meta ebuild to preserve those changes for when 10.10 releases and i split everything up in 2 meta ebuilds. Some of them have patches to work with both 10.10 and 10.9.2 but having their wayland useflags disabled. This will be changed later when 10.10 releases (I have no idea when this will happen). The added applets are: - budgie-browser-profile-launcher - budgie-cpufreq-applet - budgie-cputemp-applet - budgie-lightpad-applet (which launches lightpad) - budgie-media-player-applet - budgie-performance-gauge-applet - budgie-user-indicator-redux-applet - budgie-hostname-applet Budgie-Desktop 10.10 status is still unknown. When that releases some small applets may be removed later. See Issues tab for more info. ## >> older news See Changelog, news is not added retro active here.
