OpenAI's official Electron desktop application for Linux, published under
the Codex brand and released on 2026-08-11. It bundles ChatGPT, ChatGPT
Work and the Codex coding agent in a single window; the Codex CLI, a
private Node.js runtime and ripgrep are shipped inside the payload.

This is proprietary, closed-source software distributed only as a
prebuilt binary: nothing here is compiled from source, the package is
neither mirrored nor redistributable in binary form, and using it
requires an OpenAI account. Upstream calls the installed command
"chatgpt", which is why the package name and the binary name differ.

Note that the Linux build is a preview: it has no setuid sandbox helper
and depends on unprivileged user namespaces for renderer isolation.
